Remember the days of being in elementary school and middle school when the teacher would roll out the TV stand and you knew you were going to get to watch a movie that day? It was always great. But when it was science class and you knew it was going to be a Bill Nye the Science Guy video, it was even better.
Now, for those of us who watched Bill's videos through the years, he's giving advice on how we can get our own children into science over their summer break from school (or before they even start school at all, in my case!)
You don't have to be a scientist to get your kids into science, either! Bill Nye himself says home science lessons do NOT have to be complicated.
"Science is the easiest subject to teach because you have props... Let's just talk about me. For the last few weeks, I've been making a loaf of bread every week. The science of baking is amazing," Bill told Good Morning America.
Another really simple way to get your kids into science? You just need three things: a bottle, a balloon and yeast.
"Put yeast in a bottle with a balloon on top. The balloon will inflate. By magic? No! Science!"
And if you're worried that your kids will ask scientific questions that you definitely do not know the answer to, Bill encourages you to not be afraid to say you don't know.
"Don't be afraid to say you don't know," he said. "How does the sunflower face the sun? Well, I don't know. But it sure does. Wow, and it's huge."
He agrees that what you can learn from a textbook is valuable, but the things you can learn from just messing around and doing at-home experiments are just as important.
So parents, don't be afraid to get your hands a little messy while at home and trying to get your kids into science this summer! Plus, there aren't many places we can go right now... so keeping the kids entertained and learning while at home is a WIN-WIN!
