Millennials Are All About That Prenup Life

Millennials are reaching that magical age where everyone you know is either getting married or complaining that they’ll never get married. And when it comes to tying the knot, a lot of us are taking the advice from our financial advisor Kanye West and hollering“we want prenup!”

You can go ahead and add the “divorce industry” to the things millennials are killing because we’re figuring out that stuff out way before we hit the alter. In fact, half of matrimonial lawyers say they’re seeing an upsurge in millennials seeking prenups. But unlike the older generation who might get a prenup to protect themself from areal housewife type, our generation is signing these agreements for other reasons.

  • Prenups for Debt.Relationship finance expert Aditi Shekar says that often times it’s not wealth bringing millennials to the prenup table, but debt.Basically, these agreements help us figure out not only the extent of what is owed on both the bride and groom’s side but also create a plan for how to manage it. A prenup also makes sure nobody is getting stuck with half of any future debts someone picks up along the way.
  • Prenups For Future Money. Our generation is also into prenups to protect their raise that’s“just around the corner”or for that“layoff that’s around the other corner.”Shekar encourages her millennials clients to think about how “who earns what is going to change over a lifetime.” Especially if you’re going to throw kids into the mix, it’s probably a good idea to make sure you’re covered in case you and your boo’s income scale starts leaning heavier to one side.
  • Prenups for Pets And Embryos.Millennials take their furbaby responsibilities seriously which is why we’re signing “pet-nups.” Shekar says these “cover everything from who would get the dog if we broke up to who would pay for their bills and get their care.” We also take our future human babies pretty seriously too which is why some couples include what to do with frozen embryos in case IVF happens to be a route they take for pregnancy. You’d imagine your ex wouldn’t want a frozen cup of your baby-making goodness, but better safe than sorry.
