Whether it’s over getting ghosted or thumbs just tired swiping from left, singles seem to be doing more real-life love hunting than ever. Just like we breathed life back into the vinyl record industry, it appears millennials are bringing back “singles night” events as well.
Even though recent surveys showed 41% of daters refused to attend one out of awkwardness, many singles event organizers say their attendance has actually doubled in the past few years. Sarah Payne is the events manager for SpeedDater which does about 70 events a month and says the stigma behind them is starting to fade. She says people have developed “app-based dating fatigue” and they’re loving IRL meetups again so they can actually see people face-to-face.
Some of these event organizers are also leaning into the idea that our generation is looking for “experiences” and putting new spins on singles mixers like naked speed dating, Jenga dating, dirty Scrabble, and pheromone dating.Yes, because their eyes and heart have been failing them so far, people now trying to sniff their way to true love instead.
- Smudged Lipstick Events owner Jordi Sinclair says it’s important to note these singles mingles can’t guarantee you’ll find love but they can promise “to put on a great event.” So while you might not meet “The One”but you could end up meeting a new friend to share your secret that you tried naked speed dating.
