These First Date Hacks Real Women Swear By

First dates can be confusing and stressful and even the most confident people may find them nerve-wracking. Thankfully, other daters who have discovered helpful wisdom from their experiences are happy to pass it along to make the whole first-date process better for all of us. These are some tried-and-true tricks from real women to help empower you before you go out with someone for the first time.

  • Start the convo before your date arrives-Cassandra advises arriving early and choosing your seat wisely so you feel comfortable, then texting your date to let them know you’ve snagged a seat. She says if they reply, crack a joke - something about your outfit or how you’re five drinks deep already - so they have something to comment or joke about when they get there.
  • Go to your regular spot- Taking first dates to her go-to neighborhood bar is Nikki’s first date hack. She says she’s in her element there and because the bartender knows her, she’s treated like a VIP and looks cool in front of the date she’s trying to impress.
  • Make time for some pre-date strength training-Jill says lifting weights makes her “feel like a bad*ss who can do anything,” so she tries to hit the gym before a first date.
  • Have a precautionary snack- When you’re meeting for drinks on a first date, Erika suggests eating a little something light before you go so that liquid courage won’t hit you too hard.
  • Take a bath- To ease anxiety before a first date, Laura takes a “long, luxurious bath — sometimes with a glass of wine.”
  • Enlist a friend to check in- It reassures Holly to have a friend be in the loop about her dates, so she gives them all the details and asks them to check in later. If she’s eager to cut it short, they help her navigate the situation.
  • Own up to the nerves- When Chelsea is feeling on edge, she mentions something like, “I’m actually a little nervous” to her date and she says nine times out of 10 they’re relieved and can relate. Then they can laugh it off and move on with the date.
