If you’re a fan of the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” you’ll be familiar with the age-old question: "I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?"
It turns out the answer to that question is sadly, yes.
"Whelming" is a new dating term that journalist Patia Braithwaite coined to describe the growing trend she’d noticed of dates lamenting “about how overwhelmed they are by their other matches” instead of flirting with her. So basically whelming is humble-bragging about how many people want to get into your pants, to others who are trying to get in your pants.
Some say that whelming is basically a specific form of negging aka deliberately trying to undermine someone else’s confidence to manipulate them into wanting your approval. One whelming victim Braithwaite spoke to said they thought “it’s an ego thing” and that people do it to let us know “they’ve got options.”
If you’re a serial whelmer, do us all a favor and knock it off. We’ve all got matches, and very little time, you’re not that special!
