Over Half Of Americans Are Stressed Out By Clutter

While shopping and getting gifts can be fun, it can result in someone having a lot of stuff they don’t know what to do with, and apparently all that clutter is stressing people out.

A new survey finds:

  • 63% of Americans admit they “have too much stuff.
  • 59% say they have at least one closet, drawer or room “filled with stuff I no longer want or need.”
  • 37% of folks say their messy or disorganized home, closet or garage has caused them “extreme anxiety.”
  • 21% have lost sleep due to the stress they have from all that clutter.

De-cluttering is a big New Years resolution for folks in 2020, with 38% saying that “accumulating less stuff” and simplifying their life are goals for the New Year. So, what do they plan to do about it?

  • 30% of Gen Z plan to sell unwanted gifts, compared to only 9% of Baby Boomers who say the same.
  • 32% of Gen Xers will “regift” holiday gifts they don’t want, something 28% of all Americans say they’ll do.
  • Women are also more likely to regift then men (30% vs. 25%)
