Half Of Americans Prefer 'Experience Gifts' To Something Tangible

Want to nail your gifting giving this year? Give them the gift that keeps on giving them something to share as an Facebook memory.

A new survey reports 50% of people say they’d prefer to get an “experience” rather than more stuff this year. Apparently we didn’t have any fun in 2019 because this number took a huge jump after only 17% of people said they’d prefer an escapade last year.

“Half of holiday shoppers think experiential gifts, such as tickets to an event or subscription services, are better than tangible items, particularly Generation Z and Millennial consumers," said Diana Smith an associate director at market intelligence agency Mintel who conducted the research.

But before you start researching cheap getaway ideas for your secret santa, there’s a catch. Even though shoppers say they want an experience as a gift, the top purchases for presents continue to be tangible items like clothing, food, gift cards, toys and games.

So either we’re lying about actually wanting to goon an adventure, or we’re worried about blowing some big bucks on something people can’t really return with a gift receipt.

Extra Stats:

  • Only 33% of people say they do most of their holiday shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday
  • 12% leave the shopping to the week of the holiday
  • 82% plan to shop in store
  • 72% plan to shop online
  • 68% said they like to treat themselves during the holidays
