61% Of Bosses Are Bullies...Now What?

We’re going to need a reboot of “Horrible Bosses” asap because the writing didn’t gohorribleenough.

According to recent stats by the Workplace Bullying Institute, a whopping 66% of bosses could be considered bullies. And what makes this stat even more concerning is 61% of abuse targets remain silent and 22% of coworkers turned a blind eye to it.

  • Why Do Employees Tolerate Bullying? They need the money and they don’t know if the law is on their side. And rightly so. Currently, research shows Anti-harassment laws apply in only 20% of cases. So either there are a lot of frivolous claims going through or the laws aren’t great.
  • Turning Bystanders into Up-standers.Looking for a way to make a difference in a toxic workplace? According to several sources, “bystander intervention training is the only research-backed solution for preventing workplace sexual harassment.” Applying that thinking to workplace bullying could be the key. Studies show that half the time a trained bystander steps in, the bullying stops within 10 seconds.
  • An Internal Problem. To make a lasting change, there needs to be difficult conversations with leadership and plenty of work done to rebuild the trust of employees. But nothing can happen until someone is brave enough to call out the bullies. If you’re being harassed at work, that’s totally not cool, talk to someone immediately.
