In the words of the great poet Sweet Brown, when it comes to love and Millenials, “ain’t nobody got time for that!” Even though we have more access to singles than any other generation before us, we seem to treat “catching feelings” like it’s getting the plague.
Here’s why:
- Love and Liking Have Become Flimsy Concepts.We’ve got our guard up since we’re dating more than one person, and assume our dates are doing the same.
- One-Sided Love.We fear rejection like no other. It’s safer to avoid catching feelings than to get into a situation where you’re falling for someone, and it’s not reciprocated.
- We Don’t Have Time To Let Things Develop.We don’t have the time to work through issues and we can’t afford to let getting hurt get in the way of our goals. So instead of building a relationship by working out issues, we’d rather just move on.
What it essentially boils down is the simple equation:attachment equals anxiety.And since we already produce enough stress ourselves, we don't need some“lover”bringing us more.
