Most Young People Want To Be Social Media Influencers When They Grow Up

Ask a group of teenagers what they want to be when they grow up and you’ll probably be surprised by their answers. Instead of the professional athletes and performers kids in the past would list as careers they want to pursue, these days young people are hoping to get in on getting paid to sell stuff on social media like their favorite celebs.

A new poll of 2,000 people between 13 and 38 conducted by market research company Morning Consult finds that a majority of them want to be the same thing: a social media influencer. Get this: 86% of those surveyed say they want to become one and 12% consider themselves to be influencers already.

While we don’t need a whole generation of young people to become social media influencers, it can be a lucrative business for those with hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers. “Influencers with up to one million followers can get $10,000 per post, depending on the platform, and one million followers and up, you’re getting into territory where they can charge $100,000,” explains Joe Gagliese, one of the co-founders of Viral Nation, an influencer agency. “Some can even get $250,000 for a post! Especially if the content is on YouTube and the influencer is in the gaming industry.”
