San Fernando Valley Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus

People in some spots of California really don't think about mosquitoes much, basically because there's not always water where they could hang to multiply. But that's where we are mistaken because these little guys could live and grow in just about any little puddle of water.

Recently there were samples collected from six San Fernando Valley communities which tested positive for West Nile virus, theses areas: Encino, Northridge, Panorama City, Porter Ranch, Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also reported six human infections in the county this year, so far.

They are urging everyone to leave no standing water on their property and to also remove or seal items where mosquitoes gather and reproduce. Anything from drains, buckets, swimming pools, plant saucers and old tires... so if you have anything that can even hold a little bit of water - make sure to empty it and cover it!

The West Nile virus is transmitted to people and animals from just a bite of an infected mosquito and can cause of severe infections of the nervous system, there is also no cure for West Nile virus yet. So please be aware and be careful!

There is something we can do though. If it seems that your area is infected, people could get some of these little minnows to help reduce the possibility of spreading the West Nile Virus since these little fish snack on mosquitoes for food! Take that little buggers!
