How To Prevent "Maskne" During Coronavirus

If you live in the DMV you are still most likely wearing a mask when going out in public and while they may keep us safe, they aren’t always comfortable, and for some it’s even causing them to breakout in what is now being called “Maskne!”

“Maskne” is acne that pops up around the areas of your face covered by protective masks, and it’s likely caused by the “moist, humid environment” in the mask “as it traps your breath, skin oils and sweat, leading to irritation, rashes and acne.” It can also happen simply because the mask has contact with your face for long periods of time.

So, what can you do about it? Well, according to dermatolgists here are several tips you can use to keep your skin pimple-free even if you don't have "maskne:"

  • If it’s safe to do so, take your mask off when you can to let your face breathe.
  • Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser that’s good for your skin type.
  • Use moisturizer in the areas of your skin irritated by the mask.
  • Make sure you let your mask dry out after each wear.
  • Wash your facemasks regularly “to remove the oils and sweat trapped in it.”
  • Try not wearing makeup under your mask.
