10 Things You Didn’t Know Had Names

I love finding new words to add to my vocabulary, but earlier this week I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with coffee and when I asked my local Starbucks barista for a coffee sleeve, she informed me that it was actually called a "zarf!"

I've never heard that word before, but apparently it does mean the same thing as a coffee sleeve used to hold your coffee! I decided to look up more words and here are ten other things that you might not know have an actual name:

  1. Petrichor - The clean, greenish smell when rain lands on dry ground
  2. Chanking -The food that you spit out, like an olive pit. As a verb, it means to eat noisily
  3. Armsayes - The actual name for the "armholes" in your sleeves
  4. Qualtagh - Traditionally, the word is used to define the first person you greet in the new year
  5. Zarf - The name for the fancy cup holder has morphed into the modern-day cardboard sleeve that comes wrapped around your morning cup of joe.
  6. Glabella - The space between the eyebrows.
  7. Nef - An ornamental, silver or gold, ship-shaped stand
  8. Roorback - A damaging lie made publicly known for political effect—usually in reference to a candidate who is running for office
  9. Badinage - Playful, joking banter. It can also be used as a verb meaning to playfully banter with or tease someone
  10. Feat - It also describes a dangling curl of hair.
