Pop artist Conan Gray is facing a frenzy of harsh critics on social media following his performance of The National Anthem at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles. Some fans are calling it 'the worst national anthem rendition.' Critics are saying that the 23 year old singer was off key, off pitch, and comparing the performance to that of the infamous Fergie rendition.
Some fans are coming to his defense though. One YouTube user wrote "It really wasn't that bad. He is ofc not on a Whitney Houston type level but he can perform live his vocal range just isn't suited for this song. He is amazing at song writing and amazing in general. Period." Another, wrote "People are so dramatic. This performance wasn't even that bad. His voice just isn't perfectly suited to sing the national anthem but just listen to any other live performance he has done and how beautiful he sounds."
I agree with these comments. I've heard Conan's songs he's a wonderful singer, this song just isn't in his vocal range which is why you hear him singing pitchy and a bit off key. It's like asking Lana Del Rey to sing Love On Top by Beyonce, it's just not suited to her vocals. Listen to his performance below and see what you think. Fergie's rendition is also included because if I had to listen to it again for this article YOU HAVE TO AS WELL.
