Tommy Dorfman, best known for her role as Ryan Shaver on Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, has re-introduced herself to the world as a trans-woman.
"It’s funny to think about coming out, because I haven’t gone anywhere. I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy," she said in an interview with Time Magazine.
Over the last year, Dorfman has been sharing photos of her transition on Instagram but today is her first time publicly acknowledging it. As for her name, she felt strongly about keeping the one she was given at birth due to her connection to it. She was named after her uncle who passed shortly after she was born and sees this new section of her life as an "evolution of Tommy."
Dorfman is excited to share that Lena Dunham has casted her in her first female role in the upcoming film Sharp Stick, she will be starring in the limited series Fracture coming this fall and is set to direct an adaptation of Mason Deaver’s I Wish You All the Best.
