Rare, Creepy Looking Angler Fish Washes up on California Beach

Some could say this fish is what nightmares are made of and others can't help but think the similar resemblance to a creature we met in Finding Nemo...but regardless the internet is in awe of a washed up angler fish on a California beach.

Crystal Cove State Park's Instagram shared a post about the (literally) jaw dropping creature identifying it as a female Pacific Football Fish, a type of angler fish that resides in the ocean as far as 3,000 feet down! Notable traits of the jet black fish are her "bioluminescent tips used as a lure to entice prey in the darkness of waters" and teeth that resemble "pointed shards of glass, [that] are transparent." The page also acknowledged that her "mouth is capable of sucking up and swallowing prey the size of their own body."

The park also shared this fact about her size and gender:

"While females can reach lengths of 24 inches males only grow to be about an inch long and their sole purpose is to find a female and help her reproduce. Males latch onto the female with their teeth and become “sexual parasites,” eventually coalescing with the female until nothing is left of their form but their testes for reproduction. Wild!"

It is unknown how the fish made it's way to the shore, but scientists are taking advantage of this opportunity to learn more about this species.
