Officials Say Ocean City, MD will be Cicada-Free Zone!

Periodical Cicada, Adult, Magicicada spp. Requires 17 years to complete development. Nymph splits its skin, and transforms into an adult. Feeds on sap of tree roots. Northern Illinois Brood. This brood is the largest emergence of cicadas anywhere

Before we know it, billions of cicadas are going to be emerging from underground for the first time in 17 years...what a joy. And lucky us, Maryland is considered a hot spot for Brood X.

While these large bugs are harmless, their mating calls are LOUD and we will admit that they're kind of freaky looking. So what should you do if you want to avoid them? Apparently the answer is simple, head to Ocean City, MD!

Officials say that OCMD will be a 100% cicada free zone because these bugs thrive in soil and won't be able to survive in the sand. (CBS Baltimore)
