Personality Traits May Be Why You’re Not Motivated To Workout

Not feeling like working out? New research finds your lack of motivation for movement could be because of certain personality traits. A studyof more than 14-hundred men and women finds that for women, personality can affect how active you are, as well as how active you think you are - and those two don’t always match up.

The research focuses on two traits: extraversion and neuroticism. It finds that women who are more extraverted often self-reported more exercise than their activity monitor actually recorded. But overall those outgoing women in the study were more active than the women who scored higher for neuroticism. Those ladies reported being less active and their activity tracker data backs that up.

Study authors explain that neuroticism describes being predisposed to experience negative feelings. And along with a lower willingness to do physical activities, it seems to “be related to underreporting physical activity.” But just because you’re not predisposed to love a daily sweat sesh doesn’t mean you should give up on exercise. You may just need to find the right one and it could even help you manage those negative feelings. One workout that’s been found to boost moods? Hiking. It could be worth hitting a trail or at least going for a walk to give it a try.
