Groom Doesn't Want Groomsman Who Bullied Him

Choosing a bridal party is tough. But when a bride wants her groom's childhood bully included? That's the stuff of nightmares. Still, "Nervous Groom-to-be" wrote into Dear Abby asking for advice about how he should handle this situation.

His bride doesn't have any brothers so she asked for her male cousin to be included as a groomsman, since his sister was going to be a bridesmaid. The problem is, this cousin tormented the groom all the way through middle school and into high school. The groom has Asperger’s - and the torment was so bad that when the groom was in tenth grade, he attempted suicide and still has the scar on his right wrist.

The groom says he’s even okay with having this cousin at the wedding - because people can change - but he cannot stand the thought of him standing up on the altar next to him. He asks Dear Abby how he can explain this to his wife-to-be without sounding "shallow or petty."

  • Her response is simple: to have an honest conversation with her and explain everything just as he had explained it in the advice column.
  • And no, Abby doesn't think it would be shallow or petty for him to bring this up to his fiancé. "The scar on your wrist is visible, but clearly there are others, equally painful, that are not" she writes.
  • Dear Abby also stresses this is something he should have brought up before the wedding date was set and that he needs to do it now.
